We've all been there. You've established a solid physical activity routine – think early morning strength training to build lean muscle mass, restorative yoga to recover between workouts, and hilly neighborhood walks to get your heart rate up.
You feel fantastic, energized, and on top of your game. But then, you hit a rut in your Health and Wellness Flight Path that threatens to knock you off course. Maybe your favorite yoga studio closes down, or your usual walking route just doesn't get your heart pumping anymore. Suddenly, you feel stuck, unsure of how to maintain your progress.
Believe me, I get it! This past summer, I hit a similar pothole in my own routine. My regular yoga studio, which offered those deep stretch and recovery classes crucial for my post-strength training sessions, shut down. YouTube just wasn't cutting it for me – I couldn't seem to find the motivation to roll out my mat at home.
But here's the thing: Getting "stuck" doesn't have to derail your entire journey. Instead, view it as an opportunity to explore new avenues and discover other activities!
In my case, the answer came in the form of a percussion massager. This nifty little gadget has become a game-changer, effectively flushing lactic acid from my muscles and allowing me to reap the full benefits of my strength training sessions.
Now, let's talk about those walks. Walking is fantastic for both physical and mental health. It's a chance to clear your head, de-stress, and immerse yourself in nature. In my case, I enjoy observing the changing of the seasons while I walk, and I wouldn't trade that peaceful experience for a slightly higher heart rate. So, while I might not be pushing myself into Zone 2 (the fat-burning zone) as often on these walks, I'm prioritizing my mental well-being, which is equally important.
So, what did I do to boost my cardio in a way that fit my needs? I embraced the unexpected – I joined a kickball league! Yes, kickball!
While I haven’t played kickball since elementary school, I chose it because the rules are similar to softball (a sport I played in high school). Plus, it's a fantastic social activity. The timing was also perfect – it was the beginning of the kickball season, while softball sign-ups were closed.
This has been an absolute blast! Our league plays doubleheaders every Sunday, and the games keep my heart rate up and down throughout, hitting that Zone 2 sweet spot multiple times. But the best part? I'm having a fantastic time meeting new people and socializing with my teammates. We even meetup outside of game days to engage in other activities together – like pickleball! My husband is even eager now to join the fall league!
The takeaway? When you feel stuck on your Health and Wellness Flight Path, don't despair. See it as a chance to explore new options, discover activities you genuinely enjoy, and maybe even make some friends along the way. The key is to prioritize your overall well-being, both physical and mental, and embrace the detours that life throws your way!
